Our aim is to help students develop confidence in using a different language in a practical way. We hope that all students enjoy their language lessons and that they feel confident enough to express themselves in the foreign language.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8)
All pupils in Year 7 & 8 study French or Spanish. There are 3 lessons per week taught by subject specifically qualified teachers. Students are set in both Year 7 and Year 8.
In Year 7 the focus is on students being able to describe the world around them so we look at topics like school life, where they live, hobbies and giving personal information amongst others. There is a variety of interesting interactive and internet resources used as well as the EXPO and MIRA textbooks. The focus is on students being able to speak the language and then reading and writing skills are developed later.
In Year 8 Students then study a really exciting new course based around Spanish or French culture so we look at topics like food and drink, Target Language films, the global impact of the languages and the different regions of France or Spain. In these units we increasingly break the language down and learn grammar rules to construct our sentences. This new Scheme of Learning has had a really positive impact on student enjoyment and motivation.
Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11)
As part of the option choices German, Spanish and French are offered in Year 9, leading to GCSE in 3 years. We expect all students to study a language.
Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13)
We offer French, German and Spanish in the 6th Form at AS and A Level, which are taught in conjunction with Newton Abbot College and Teign School.
In addition, any students who speak other languages may be entered for public examinations. Over the past few years, our students have been entered for Russian, Chinese, Italian, Greek and Polish.
The Language Department staff organise study visits to Nice. We are hoping to extend this to include Spain.
