Mathematics

In the Mathematics Team we are particularly focused on students’ mathematical and learning potential. We all aim to promote learning that addresses the individual needs of all learners enabling each student to make the best possible progress. We believe that we can have a significant impact on students’ learning of mathematics and we have a significant role to play in meeting their many other needs as they mature into adults as well as developing the vision of mathematics as an important tool for life, encouraging students to explore mathematics in the world they live in.

Students are taught in ability groups. In placing students in an appropriate group a number of issues are considered. In Years 7 and 8 great weight is given to a student’s potential as identified by results & information from KS2 and classroom teachers assessment of ‘innate’ ability. In Years 9, 10 and 11 we are more constrained by examination requirements and tier of entry. In these years, supremacy is given to prior attainment in internal and external examinations and changes of groups is also determined predominantly by these results.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8)

Throughout the course students are regularly assessed and their progress is monitored. If we feel that a student is currently in the wrong set they will be moved to one which we feel is more appropriate and tailored to their individual needs and current attainment. In addition to this, students are enrolled in the accelerated Maths programme, which is the partner programme to Accelerated Reader used in English. The aim of the programme is develop numerical proficiency which can be developed and practised both at school and at home through remote access.

Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11)

The curriculum for mathematics from September 2013 has been revised and restructured. We currently offer the new linked pair GCSE for all students following the AQA GCSE course. The students sit two GCSEs, Methods in Mathematics and Applications in Mathematics, allowing them to develop their mathematics skills ensuring they achieve the best grades possible in two GCSEs.

We also offer two additional qualifications:

  • AQA GCSE Statistics – Higher tier/Foundation, this is undertaken by all students by the end of Year 11
  • AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics – aimed at students who would like to extend their mathematical knowledge beyond GCSE, possibly in preparation for A level Mathematics or merely as an additional mathematics qualification, this is currently undertaken by the top two sets in Year 11

Enrichment

Throughout a student’s education in mathematics, we believe it is vital that the mathematics is no solely aimed at examinations but also provides opportunities for enrichment and enjoyment. We are currently developing the enrichment programme to incorporate real-life mathematics linking to the STEM project (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) with local business, the Southampton Cipher Challenge, Enrichment/Gifted and Talented workshops offered by Exeter and Plymouth University. We will also be taking a group of students on a residential trip to Bletchley Park and Greenwich to look at code breaking and mathematics in science.

Mathematics Club (lunchtime support/activities for students)

In the Mathematics Area we run a Maths Help Club every lunchtime. This is a drop in session and its sole aim is to provide students with an opportunity to seek extra assistance with their mathematics work they do outside of lessons.

Students can attend for any of the following reasons:

  • To get individual help with aspects of their homework
  • To get help because they didn’t understand aspects of the work done in the lesson
  • To complete / do their homework
  • To use the computers to do online homework (especially if students are having issues with access at home)
  • To do extra maths to extend knowledge and understanding

Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13)

AQA A-level Mathematics – Students need to have gained a grade A*, A, or B at GCSE to study mathematics at this level.

AQA Further Mathematics – Offered to our most able mathematicians.
