Science

Our aim is for students to gain an enthusiasm for and an understanding of Science and its applications appropriate to a continually developing technologically based society. Whilst studying Science at Coombeshead students revise, amend and extend their understanding of scientific ideas, explanations and theories as they probe more and more deeply into the subject. Our priority is to make the learning in science as interesting and relevant as possible, whilst also making it fun!

Science is taught to all students from Year 7 to Year 11. All courses cover the Programmes of Study as laid out in the Science National Curriculum, but scope is provided to enable staff to display their own skills, interests and individual teaching styles within the broad framework of the schemes of work.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8)

During these years students cover a variety of topics including reproduction, ecology, reactions and reactivity, materials, energy, electricity and forces. They will also study diet and digestion, infection and disease, inheritance, solutions, elements and compounds, light, sound, speed, pressure and heat transfer. Students are taught in sets according to their ability from the start of Year 7.

Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11)

At Coombeshead we strive to offer a variety of courses to meet the needs of all of our students. To this aim we teach two pathways and the choice of course for a particular student is based on teacher’s professional judgement and discussion with the student. The courses that we currently offer are listed below however we await the specifications for the new GCSEs.

AQA GCSE Triple Science

Students selected to study Triple Science gain 3 separate GCSE’s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This course is devised to engage, inspire, stretch and challenge our most able students. The students are examined at the end of Year 11.

AQA GCSE Double Award Science

This course attaches importance to the knowledge, skills and understanding of how science works in the world at large as well as in the laboratory. All students cover the 3 subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This enables students to gain 2 GCSE’s in Science. Exams are taken in the summer term of year 11.

Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13)

For those students wishing to continue studying the Science Post-16 we currently offer AS and A2 Level qualifications in Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Or as an alternative option we deliver a BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science.
